RING CATCHING GAME ETIQUETTE
AND WHY THE WAY OF THE RING?
The origins of this game date back to the very early days of the
carousel when it was used as a cavalry training device in the Middle
East over one thousand years ago. Soldiers sat on the flying seats of
the carousel as it rotated counterclockwise so that their right arm,
holding a sword or stick, could swing out at some sort of target such
as a straw man or even a live human (captured enemy). Crusader knights
learned about this training device and brought the idea back with them to
their European castles where it was built and guarded as a great secret. Knights
would train with this military device and become better warriors thus defeating their
enemies.
When the carousel was first released from the castle training arenas
it became a fancy amusement ride in the pleasure gardens of the
royalty. Instead of the riders holding swords they would merely grab
for a ring from the dispenser close to the outer edge of the ride. A
few hundred years later it was decreed that carousels could be built
for the common people, the ring catching trick continued to be used.
Added to it was the target receptacle where the riders that caught a
ring would try to land it.
Some operators include a ring of a different color with the mix, if a
rider catches this ring a free ride is rewarded. All the rings belong
to the carousel ride. If a rider would like to take a ring home a ring
must be purchased from the operator. Take a look at this Wikipedia or Google and find a brass ring carousel near you!
Simple Rules:
1.) Rings can't be grabbed until you've made one whole revolution on the ride.
2.) You can try to grab more than one ring at a pass.
3.) As you pass the target receptacle toss the rings into the holes.
4.) Keep score for yourself and see how good you can get.
5.) Rings cannot be removed from carousel ride area.
6.) Rider who catches the last ring in the dispenser gets a free ride.
7.) Look at this diagram of game when a carousel is not available.
If you're unable to ride a carousel with a ring catcher at the moment,
fake it. Form a circle with your group and quickly skip around as if
you're riding a carousel animal and grab for a ring or something
similar, use a cardboard box for a target receptacle. As a fun craft
project colorful components to this game can be made. Ring catching
devises are available.
