HURRICANE DEVASTATED TOWN GETS CAROUSEL, NEEDS PAVILION
Fall 2007: 10 rider “flying horses” carousel is donated by Port Townsend Carousel Association to Waveland, Mississippi, ground zero for Hurricane Katrina’s landfall.  August 29, 2005 Waveland was blown completely down, flattened, and hit by tremendous rains and tidal serge, virtually destroying the whole town and surrounding area.  For over two years the citizens of Waveland have been digging out, surviving, and trying to rebuild; it is a long and slow process.  Steve Hill (Hill Moving Services) of Poulsbo WA will be shipping the carousel to Waveland February 2008.

NATIONWIDE GATHERING OF CAROUSEL PAVILION BUILDERS TO WORK WITH LOCAL COMMUNITY
Building a carousel pavilion is simple and fun, the perfect project for a group of energetic builders of all ages.  With the pavilion protecting the carousel, children and families of the area will have the beginnings of a park to visit right now in their soon to be completed downtown city center.  The Port Townsend Carousel Association and individuals and groups in Waveland, Mississippi, are organizing a nationwide gathering of builders to participate in this Pavilion Raising "Extreme Make-Over" Expedition.  Consider this an invitation to all interested persons, wherever you may reside.  Join in with us, let's meet in Waveland and put this together.

PROJECT OVERVIEW AND TIMING

Organizers will be procuring funds to buy materials and finalize the design process.  They will also be aligning the various components of the project so that everything is ready to go for a short (two weeks) but grand community building experience.  This will be something like a barn raising, after some basic foundation prep, groups will be cutting an preparing the parts for the pavilion then assembling it all on site.  Afterward the carousel will be taken out of storage and assembled.  With trained operators the carousel will be ready for rides.

SIGN-UP FOR TWO WEEK EVENT (CONTACT: Bill Dentzel, bilito@gmail.com or cell # 360-531-2812)
Sign-up and get your name on the list for this two week event in which we will build a hurricane-proof (as much as can be) pavilion and install the handmade wooden antique style "flying horses" carousel in its new permanent location.  There will be a camping area provided with cooking facilities (food to be arranged by participants).  All building materials will be provided; some personal tools might be needed but not required (see Tools note below).  You must provide your own transportation, carpooling is encouraged (airport pick-ups are being investigated, more on this later).

EXTREME MAKE-OVER SKILLS NEEDED
A date has not yet been set, but getting on the list of participants will assure that you get email updates on the planning progress and notification of the event’s schedule.  There will be a limit on the number of participants as a safety concern.  Not all persons must be experienced carpenters, concrete workers, or roofers, though some obviously will.  All ages are welcome.  Please contact Bill Dentzel of the Port Townsend Carousel Association, give him your e-mail address or phone number if you want to be on the list:  bilito@gmail.com or 360-531-2812.

PAVILION DESIGN AND BUILDING PROCESS (subject to change depending on design development (SEE Waveland Expedition Page 2 FOR DESIGN SKETCH):

  1. Concrete Anchored Posts (8) supporting a continuous octagonal concrete stress-ring top-plate will be the basic frame of the structure.  36 foot diameter, 10 feet high at the top-plate.  We will dig for the footings, make forms for the posts and beams, place re-bar, pour concrete.  This work will likely be done before the main building event commences.
  2. Roof Framing will be timbers merging in the center 16 feet high with an octagonal collar approximately 4 feet out from the center upon which a cupola will be built.  Several long concrete embedded ties will be coming up from the posts and fastened along the sides of the beams as giant hurricane ties forming a continuous bond from foundation through the roof.
  3. Roof surface can be car decking or plywood covered with asphalt shingles or metal.
  4. An 8 foot diameter concrete pad elevated one foot above grade will be formed in the center of the covered area for the carousel base.
  5. A soft playground surface will be filled in between the pad and the perimeter of the pavilion.
  6. A crowd control barrier (low fence) with one small entry gate will encircle the carousel.  This entry gate is operator controlled.
  7. Solar panels will be fastened on the roof and wires will be set in a control area next to the gate and under ground to the central pad..
  8. The carousel will have a DC electric motor, low voltage lights, and a music player.

Special Features...in planning:

Solar Powered Electric Motor System (not yet funded, but working on it!)

Foot-Pedaling Option (not yet funded, but working on it!)

OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP:

If you can't make it to Waveland as part of the Pavilion Expedition you can still help with a financial donation or in-kind donation.  We need money and materials (see list below) for our carousel finishing and logistics.  It can be in the form of a donation, sponsorship of a carousel part, or purchase of some our carousel jewelry items or posters.  Donations can be given to the Port Townsend Carousel Association which is a federally recognized 501c-3 and Washington State non-profit corporation.  Go to sponsorship page or the bottom half of the main page for information.  Any funds received will go towards finishing the carousel, building the pavilion, and setting the carousel up in Waveland.

MATERIALS, IN-KIND DONATIONS:

Food for work crew

Backhoe for footing preparation

Lumber for concrete forms, for roof structure

Concrete, we need over 10 cubic yards

Roofing material, several possibilities: asphalt shingles, metal

Playground soft surfacing material
