Bear circa 1910

Dentzel bears were usually painted brown or black, like the bears seen in North America. There are a few Dentzel bears painted with the black and white markings of a panda from China. This was another sign of the events to come in the future and make Dentzel history. Carl S. Dentzel, Edward's step-son, William II's half brother, inherited a large some of money from his biological father's estate at which time he dashed off, at a very young age, and made a trip to China where he remained for an extended visit before returning to his job as a writer for a French newspaper. During this 1930's China visit, Carl was able to purchase numerous pieces of ancient Chinese artwork. This eventually became a special collection for a large private museum. Carl never took his step-father's family's trade of carouselmaking very seriously and decided to drive a '62 Chevy Nova station wagon back and forth to the Southwest Indian Museum in San Marino, California everyday for over twenty years. Because of the increased traffic during this period, Carl had less and less time to contemplate the fact that his mother married into a "carnie" family.
